Many young hockey players dream of playing in the Stanley Cup finals, and maybe even the Olympic gold-medal match.
Though few will get to realize those dreams, today in Barrie some young hockey players got a taste of what it could be like.
They had the pro-pre-game cliché talk down pat.
“Shoot pass and work hard as a team,” says Ethan.
And they were introduced and took to the ice like pros. And just like the pros they stood like proud Canadians for their country’s anthem.
Restaurant chain McDonalds surprised the atom hockey players in Barrie with the complete professional treatment, catching players like Malcolm and Theron off guard.
“Just a little hint of what the NHL is going to be like,” says Malcom as Theron adds, “It was pretty cool since it was the first time with all the music and announcers and everyone.”
McDonalds Atomic Hockey is enjoyed by more than 40,000 players and local McDonalds franchise owner Jason O'Neil says it's a win-win situation.
“We want to give back in our community, we want to be good neighbours, this is all part of it,” he says. “Giving back to the kids and growing our program.”
Fans were given supplies to make signs as the excitement worked its way into the stands.
“It was bit of a surprise for us, but we had a lot of fun today,” says parent Pam Brown.
Barrie Colts announcer Darryl Mabley announced all the action, adding to the pro feel of the game.
“You see the smiles on their faces and it says it all,” he says. “That's all I'm here for.”
Some star players like Brandon even scored an interview with the second best dressed man in hockey, Ronald McDonald. And who's the first?
“Don Cherry for sure, he's an awesome guy,” Brandon says.
All this pro treatment had some parents even a little envious of the kids.
“Little bit,” says Richard Leblanc. “Wish I was still playing hockey.”
The McDonalds Atomic Hockey Program could show up at any time at any arena and make a kid feel like a pro for a day.
