Young Barrie Colts players donate over 1,000lbs of apples to local food bank
Some young Barrie Colts players held a fundraiser to take action against hunger, donating over 1,000 apples to the Barrie Food Bank.
The Barrie Colts U10B and U12A Blue rep hockey teams held their 'Apples for Hockey' fundraiser last month, raising $1,900 for team development and, on Wednesday, they donated exactly 1,173 pounds of apples from Barrie Hill Farms to the food bank.
"We are grateful to Barrie Hill Farms for supplying us with the apples. This fundraiser not only helped us raise money for the team but has also taught our players the importance of giving back to the community and the impact they can have," said U12A Blue team head coach Jaime Windle.

The teams were motivated by statistics revealing that one in three Simcoe Muskoka households experienced some level of food insecurity in 2023.
Each hockey team sold 10-pound bags of apples for $22 each.
Supporters had the choice of purchasing for themselves or donating a bag to the local food bank.
"The option to donate a bag to the Barrie Food Bank was a great way for friends and family who aren't local to the area to still support the team," explained Jessica Manson, the Barrie Colts U12A_Blue team manager.
