A woman had to be rescued from her apartment on Saturday night after a fire in south Barrie.
It happened just before 10:00 p.m. at an apartment complex on D’Ambrosio Drive.
When emergency crews arrived they found one apartment up in flames. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to one unit and put it out. People who live in the building say the fire spread quickly.
“It wasn’t out on the balcony yet, it was in her building, in her window. Then it spread outwards to the building before they (fire department) got here. Literally it was three minutes – windows were breaking and everything,” says Devyn Samuelsson & Riley Hart.
The woman who lived in the apartment was rescued by man who scaled the balcony to save her. She suffered minor burns and was taken to RVH, treated and released. One other person was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
An official with the Ontario Fire Marshal's office tells CTV News the fire started in the bedroom of the apartment. Damage is estimated at over $500,000.
Fifty people were displaced due to the fire but most of them were staying with family and friends. Canadian Red Cross officials say ten people who didn’t have any place to go had to stay the night at Innisfil Community Church. They are expected to be moved to a local hotel on Sunday.
