Health officials are warning tonight that the first human case of West Nile virus this season has been confirmed in Toronto.  A 68 year old man got the virus in mid-July but was never admitted to hospital for it.

In York Region health officials are also warning that they have found the first mosquitoes in traps testing positive for the virus.

The mosquitoes that tested positive were trapped overnight in Markham near Bayview and John Street.  West Nile is transmitted to humans mainly through mosquito bites.

The best way to protect yourself from West Nile is to get rid of standing water, or areas where mosquitoes can live around the home, wear light coloured clothing, and use a proper mosquito repellant.
