'We will get through this situation,' Gravenhurst battles storm damage
In its third State of Emergency update since the area was hit with over a metre of snow, Gravenhurst staff are asking people from outside the area to stay home and not check on how their cottages fared during the storm.
Town staff are still encouraging residents to stay home.
"Please avoid travel by foot or car. Attempting to navigate roads hinders workers' abilities to deal with snow removal, downed trees and downed power lines," the statement reads.
The Centennial Centre is open until further notice for people requiring shelter. The statement also asks that people who do not need the centre to stay home.
"We are trying to avoid situations where people leave their home, get stuck en route to the centre, and then require assistance."
Downed hydro lines are affecting clean up efforts. Town staff estimate they have removed more than 50 trees since the storm.
The update notes that Gravenhurst's main Hydro One line comes into the south end of the community, and while it remains without power, residents can expect power outages.
Finally, town staff ask people to check on their neighbours to ensure they're taken care of.
"We have heard several stories about people caring for each other and these are heartwarming and reflective of our great community. We have a long history of working together in the face adversity. We will get through this situation."
