Two new warming centres open providing relief to vulnerable

Two new warming centres will help take the pressure off some existing facilities while giving people in need of a break from the cold a couple of more options.

Faith Missionary Church in Wasaga Beach will serve as a new location, opening its basement to the community when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius or colder. The space can accommodate up to 10 beds.

“We know there are people in the community who need shelter, and we just want to love people the way Jesus loved us, so we are making this available as best we can,” said Pastor Graham Gaessler of Faith Missionary Church.

Wasaga Beach already has a full-time shelter, but it often reaches capacity. Other warm spots include the town’s Rec Plex and new library. Faith Missionary Church is equipped with cots, bedding and warmth for those in need.

“It’s a warm, safe place overnight, and individuals will also be provided with access to nutrition and programs that might help them in their situation,” said Craig Williams, general manager of community services.

The second new warming centre has opened in Barrie at the paramedic bay on Tiffin Street.

“This is where individuals will be able to seek refuge from the elements,” said Andrew Scavatelli, director of community support and well-being, while showing the space. “We’ve set up tables, chairs, and a room with space for up to 10 people for both daytime and overnight warming.”

Scavatelli stressed the importance of a collaborative approach, “Wherever we can support individuals, getting them out of the elements in winter or into cooling centres in summer—it takes a whole community effort. We are making headway, but there’s more to do.”

Both centres will open Monday night, as temperatures are expected to drop below 10 degrees Celsius. For information on warming centres, residents are encouraged to call 211.
