A grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will help say a piece of history that is deteriorating in Oro-Medonte.

The Oro African Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1847 and is a national historical site but it’s in very rough shape and needs at least $140,000 in basic repairs.

The Township of Oro-Medonte reached out to the public for help and managed to raise just over $70,000. It also worked with the Vaughan African Canadian Association to apply for a Trillium grant that will give them just over $94,000.

With the combined money, the township can now go ahead to restore the church and will be working with heritage consultants in the next couple of weeks to finalize the details of the restoration.

The church also plans to keep the fundraising campaign going in order to repair and maintain the church in the future.
