A new transit service is now being offered in Meaford.
The town decided earlier this year to use its "handy van" for the one-year pilot transit project. The van has room for 14 passengers and is equipped with a wheel chair lift.
The need for transit became more urgent this summer when the main grocery store in the town's core closed.
“It was a blow to the community for sure and yes we had to do something,” says Mayor Barb Clumpus.
It's the first scheduled transit service for Meaford and costs $4. The town will use federal and provincial gas tax money to help pay for the transit system.
“There will be another opportunity to revisit the idea of expanding this but for now we are just going to concentrate on the urban area.”
The bus service operates Monday to Friday and town staff says they are open to feedback during the pilot project.
The first two weeks of service will be free so people get a chance to try it out.
