Early Thursday morning, Barrie Police were called to a store that sells reusable items.

An employee came across some possible ammunition that arrived in a recent donation.

The store staff were very cooperative, said Peter Leon, corporate communications coordinator.

He said staff were unable to determine who may have dropped off the items but acted in a manner that kept their staff safe until police arrived and took possession of the suspected ammunition.

Leon said police recognize that incidents like this are rare. But he does encourage the public to reach out and seek the advice of a police service when it comes to the safe surrendering of weapons including firearms and ammunition.

Police will identify the proper process by which these items can be safely turned in for destruction, and will work with owners to ensure the process is followed.
