Police remained on scene throughout the day on Friday where on Thursday an OPP officer was stabbed responding to a call in Orillia.

The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoking a mandate after the shooting.

On Thursday the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a residence on Barrie Road.

Once officers arrived, they located the suspect on Cochrane Street and Matchedash Street South, where the SIU says he was armed with an edged weapon.

OPP say the responding officer was stabbed during the encounter and suffered serious injuries, while adding that the officer discharged their firearm and as a result, the person was pronounced dead at the hospital.

On Friday OPP commissioner Thomas Carrique released a statement confirming that the officer had been released from hospital and is now recovering at home.

"I want to express my gratitude to the officers and Provincial Communications Centre members who assisted our officer, as well as the medical professionals who provided care. Our thoughts are with everyone involved in or impacted by this incident," said Carrique.

A video provided to CTV News shows several police officers on the scene taking the suspect into custody while other officer tended to the injured officer.

OPP say at least one home caught part of the incident on video surveillance and that video has been handed over to police.

According to police, the officer is expected to survive but no other details are being released on their condition.

The SIU says five investigators, three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday in Toronto.
