There was a big police presence outside a Barrie apartment building early this morning after several shots were fired at a third floor apartment.
The gunfire left residents in the building shocked and scared.
Many people who live in the Golfdale Road apartment complex were startled and woken up by the sound of gun shots early this morning. No one was injured, but police found bullet holes on a third-floor balcony.
At this point, investigators don’t know why the apartment was shot at.
Investigators examined bullet holes on the railing and in the balcony door of the apartment which is in the Bayfield Street and Cundles Road area.
Tina Ashworth lives next door and was woken up by the sounds of gun shots, which rang out at about 2 a.m.
“I heard a big bang six times, it sounded like a shot gun,” she says.
Neighbours reported hearing multiple gun shots but didn't see anyone. The violent sound forced some people to duck for cover in their apartments.
“I bowed down my head,” says Minda Dumalanta. “I thought the bullet came in my apartment.”
Police say no one was injured and the tenants of the apartment that was shot at are cooperating with the investigation. Bullet holes can be seen in the balcony door and on the railing. At this point investigators don't know who their suspect or suspects are, or what the motive was.
“We're not even certain if that area was meant to be shot at,” says Barrie Const. Angela Butler. “We need to find out what happened and until we find the person responsible for this. That's the piece we're missing right now.”
Investigators canvassed the neighbourhood for evidence and spoke with witnesses. Police believe this is an isolated incident but many neighbours say the sound of gunshots still lingers and has them worrying tonight.
“Very scared, very uneasy,” says resident Dianne. “I don't know if I'll be sleeping in my bedroom tonight.”
“I just moved in here and it’s frightening,” says Ashworth.
Police are reviewing surveillance video from the apartment complex, hoping it will have captured the shooting or help identify the suspect or suspects.
In the meantime, investigators are asking anyone who may have seen something in this area around 2 a.m. to contact them.
