Many areas across Simcoe Muskoka, upper York Region and Grey County are under rainfall warnings and fog advisories as of Sunday morning.

According to Environment Canada, rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 millimetres are expected in combination with melting snow, and that frozen ground has reduced ability to absorb the rainfall.

The national weather agency states that a low-pressure system is expected to bring occasionally heavy downpours that can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is also possible.

For areas that are under fog advisory, Environment Canada states that patchy dense fog has developed and will persist in the morning hours, and that visibility may suddenly reduce to near-zero.

The areas under both a rainfall warning and a fog advisory include:

  • Bracebridge
  • Caledon
  • Georgina
  • Grand Valley
  • Gravenhurst
  • Haliburton
  • Huntsville
  • Minden
  • Newmarket
  • Northern York Region
  • Orangeville

The areas under a rainfall warning include:

  • Angus
  • Barrie
  • Blue Mountains
  • Coldwater
  • Collingwood
  • Dundalk
  • Grey County
  • Hanover
  • Hillsdale
  • Innisfil
  • Midland
  • New Tecumseth
  • Orr Lake
  • Orillia
  • Owen Sound
  • Parry Sound
  • Shelburne
  • Washago

The heavy rainfall is expected to begin Sunday morning or afternoon and end in the evening according to Environment Canada.

Drivers are urged to turn on their lights and maintain a safe following distance when encountering reduced visibility.
