Police officer injured while arresting suspect

A Barrie police officer suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries while arresting a suspect Sunday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service responded to a weapons-related call involving a man armed with a knife at a Bayfield Street McDonald's.

Police say there was an 'interaction' between officers and the suspect while the suspect was being arrested and transported away from customers inside the restaurant. An officer sustained lacerations from an edged weapon and was immediately taken to hospital for treatment. The officer has since been released.

The 39-year-old suspect was taken into custody, and criminal charges against him are pending. Police say that he is of no fixed address.

Access to the restaurant is limited to a side door and drive-thru while the forensic identification and traffic units investigate the scene.
