UPlift Black in Barrie hosted a poetry fundraiser Saturday afternoon to raise funds for the local Women’s and Children’s Shelter.

Led by Creative Barrie and City Poet Laureate Tyneisha Thomas, around 20 performers of all ages shared their creative poetry work in front of those in attendance.

“It’s all about women empowerment, and poetry, [talking] about the healing powers of poetry,” said Thomas. “It is all ages, friendly to all and all genders are welcome too. We have popcorn, tea, poetry, what more do we need.”

The afternoon featured poetry sessions from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.
