A memorial to an officer killed in the line of duty is set to be unveiled in Keswick.
A park will be named in honour of York Regional Police Constable Garrett Styles, who was killed two years ago.
The park, located at 176 Laurendale Avenue, features swings, a splash pad and children’s area and is the same neighbourhood as Constable Styles lived in with his young family before he was killed.
Constable Styles was killed during a traffic stop in the early morning hours of June 28th, 2011. According to police, Styles pulled over a minivan being driven by a 15-year-old. At some point during the traffic stop, the ten allegedly tried to drive away, dragging Constable Styles and eventually pinning him underneath the van.
Constable Styles died from his injuries, while the accused is paralyzed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair. His case is still before the courts.
The park is the latest honour for Constable Styles; he also has a roadside memorial along Highway 48 and a charity ride & basketball tournament in his honour.
