Police are still not calling it a murder but people in Kearney, north of Huntsville, say it was. The woman who died was in her 80’s and according to neighbours lived alone. Police are not saying much except to say this is a suspicious death.
The OPP helicopter could be seen circling Kearney on Monday while on the ground police officers canvass the area and search for evidence at a Main Street home.
“It’s really a shock to see that many police officers around, they’ve been going door to door talking to people,” said Kearney resident Gerry McNeely.
Police haven’t officially identified the woman but neighbours tell CTV News her name was Dolores White and they say she was attacked in her home early Sunday morning.
“I feel sorry for her two daughters, she has lived in that house all of her life with her in-laws and when her husband was alive and it just doesn’t seem real,” added McNeely.
Police were called to the home around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday and found White with injuries. She was rushed to hospital in Huntsville where she later died. Police refuse to say what her injuries were; in fact they won’t even call it a murder so far. Police also refuse to say if there’s a suspect at large but they are telling people in Kearney to make sure they lock their doors.
“Until we complete the investigation we don’t know what’s involved and we’re just asking people to be aware of their surroundings,” says Almaguin Highlands OPP Const. Louise Maki.
This death has devastated the community – leaving many to speculate about what happened and to worry for their own safety.
“People are worried and locking their doors that haven’t locked their doors. Last night was a little different, I did get up and lock everything up for the first time,” added McNeely.
An autopsy was done on Monday in Toronto and police say the results are expected on Tuesday and those results and a clear cause of death by Tuesday.
