A Thornhill resident accused of driving at a high rate of speed along Highway 11 in Muskoka while impaired faces charges.

Provincial police say officers were heading north along the highway through Huntsville on Saturday night when a vehicle sped past, travelling 95 kilometres over the posted limit.

The officers conducted a traffic stop and police say they determined the driver was impaired.

The 25-year-old man faces charges of impaired driving, being a novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero, and stunt driving – excessive speed.

As a result of the charges, the accused won’t be back behind the wheel for at least three months. His driver’s licence was suspended and the vehicle was impounded for two weeks.

Provincial police warn motorists the annual Festive R.I.D.E. campaign is underway with a mission to enforce and educate about the dangers of impaired driving.

They ask the public to report suspected impaired driving by calling 911.

The campaign runs until January 1.
