Alleged stabbing at restaurant results in attempted murder charge

A Newmarket man, 40, is facing a series of charges in relation to an alleged stabbing inside a restaurant in the area of Davis Drive and Longford Drive on Sunday night.

Police say officers arrived to find a suspect outside the establishment and two people with stab wounds near the entrance.

York Regional police say the suspect attacked a 34-year-old man with a knife and stabbed a second, 64-year-old man several times when he attempted to stop the attack.

"The altercation moved into the parking lot where citizens intervened and subdued the suspect until police arrived," the authorities added.

No other injuries were reported.

Police say both men suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The accused is charged with two counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault with a weapon, among other offences.
