A lone sailor living on a sailboat trapped in the Georgian Bay ice has sparked concern among Penetanguishene residents.

The man, who police say has been living aboard the boat since summer, has drawn the attention of locals, some of whom have brought groceries and supplies to him during the cold months.

One resident, Evan Topping said he wielded together a wooden stove and walked it out to his sailboat. Topping spoke to the sailor who shared he wants to be ignored, “He says he's fine and just wants people to leave him alone but the opposite of that is happening.”

Southern Georgian Bay OPP Const. David Hobson confirmed officers are aware of the situation and have been checking in on him.

“Officers have been in contact with the individual and community partners have been advised,” Hobson said. “At this time, officers continue to monitor the situation, and the individual is currently not in need of assistance.”

Police say the man reportedly keeps to himself and does not bother anyone, he is able to leave the boat at any time as long as the ice holds. However, his living conditions in the icy waters have left some in the community uneasy as winter intensifies.
