Plans to build a standalone university in Barrie received another big boost tonight.
The Laurentian University board of governors has approved $25 million in funding for a Barrie campus. That amount would be added to the $14 million already committed by the City of Barrie for the campus, bringing the total amount set for the school to about $39 million.
Laurentian also says it's identified a 64-acre chunk of land on Essa Road as the potential location for the proposed 225,000-square-foot campus and student residence.
The school would enroll 3,100 full-time students. A residence would be built for about 500 to 750 students.
