'Intense bands of lake-effect snow' expected in Muskoka: Environment Canada

Share

Lake-effect snow will wreak havoc on the Muskoka region this weekend.

Snow squalls are expected to begin Thursday night and continue through to Sunday morning.

Environment Canada says accumulations could exceed 30 centimetres by Friday night and expects peak snowfall rates of five to 10 centimetres per hour.

Lake-effect snow off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay is forecasted to strengthen Thursday evening into Friday morning and will persist most of the weekend.

The national weather agency’s latest analysis indicates that a very intense band of lake effect snow will affect portions of the area during the day Friday and that some areas may receive well in excess of 50 cms by Sunday.

Environment Canada cautions that road closures are possible, especially over areas that receive multiple lake effect bands.

Travel could be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility. Highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
