Indoor compost machine has great a-peel

Georgian Bluffs partnered with FoodCycler Science to introduce an innovative indoor composting technology to the community, helping to divert food waste from landfills.
The program's initial phase saw 100 units sold in 2023, resulting in 27.9 metric tonnes (MT) of food waste being diverted.
"We're thrilled to see the continued success of the FoodCycler Program in Georgian Bluffs," said Niall Lobley, CAO of Georgian Bluffs. "This initiative offers a practical, impactful solution for reducing household waste, empowering households to contribute to environmental sustainability right from their kitchens. By participating, you're not just reducing your carbon footprint—you're playing a vital role in fostering a greener, more sustainable future for our community."
Due to its success, the program was extended into 2024, with the first batch of 100 units selling out two weeks earlier this year. The town has now restocked and has an additional 100 units available for purchase at $150 or $300, depending on capacity.

The FoodCycler unit heats and grinds food waste into a dry, odourless, and nutrient-rich by-product that can be used in gardens and houseplants. Residents who purchase a unit are encouraged to track the amount of waste they divert over 12 weeks and complete a survey to provide feedback on their experience with the program.
FoodCyclers are available for $150 or $300, with the next 100 units available on a first-come, first-served basis.
They can be purchased at the 177964 Grey Road 18 township office during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Earth Machine and Green Cone outdoor composters are also available for sale.
