Collingwood's holiday tree re-lighting wows after initial mishap

Share

Collingwood residents gathered on Friday for a second chance at holiday cheer following an earlier questionable tree lighting that sparked comparisons to Orillia’s now-famous Christmas tree debacle from last year.

This time, the tree dazzled, with the redesigned, colourful display garnering applause and cheers from those in attendance.

“So much better,” one woman in the crowd could be heard saying.

The initial tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 16 left many scratching their heads, and the Business Improvement Area (BIA) determined to make it right.

The tree lighting on Nov. 16 (L) compared to the tree re-lighting (R) on Nov. 29, 2024, in Collingwood, Ont.

The BIA explained the mishap happened after a new set of donated lights were added to the tree, but the untested setup resulted in a grid-like arrangement that many described as reminiscent of a 'Charlie Brown Christmas' tree.

"It was not the result we all hoped for,” the BIA noted in an email to CTV News following the Nov. 16 ceremony.

Friday’s take-two is the redemption the BIA hoped for and included a visit from Santa Claus, plus plenty of activities for the whole family.
