Police arrested a man accused of being impaired while driving through a school zone on Friday.

Provincial police say an officer stopped a vehicle around 11 a.m. on Wellington Street near Armstrong Street in Bracebridge.

The officer launched an impaired driving investigation after speaking with the driver and ultimately charged the 45-year-old man from Utterson with being behind the wheel while intoxicated.

Police remind motorists they will be patrolling throughout the long weekend.

The OPP issued a release on Friday, noting nearly 300 people had lost their lives this year on Ontario roads, with the vast majority being preventable deaths attributed to careless actions and behaviours.

The service reported deaths linked to driver inattention are up 40 per cent over this time last year, with impaired driving, speeding and seatbelt violations, among other factors that resulted in loss of life.
