This week marks the opening of a new road in Barrie's south end, which is anticipated to help ease traffic congestion.

The City says the Bryne Drive south extension that connects Caplan Avenue to Harvie Road will be open to traffic on Friday afternoon.

Crews started work on the new road in July 2023.

The south extension features five traffic lanes, sidewalks, bike lanes, updated landscaping, and a new sanitary sewer, water main, and stormwater treatment systems.

The extension is split into two projects, the south and north - connecting Harvie Road to Essa Road. The north extension remains in limbo. According to the City, property acquisitions pushed the expected completion of the design project to 2031.
