Heavy downpours and thunderstorms affected much of Muskoka on Tuesday, leading to flooding in Huntsville.

The town of Huntsville says the area experienced more than 100 mm of precipitation over a 24 hour period.

“Crews have been out patrolling our roadways to assess any damage and are working on addressing priority situations first,” says Deputy Mayor Karin Terziano.

Several businesses have been impacted, including the local food bank, The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation. Staff says there are several cms of water in a storage area.

Another local gym, Crossfit Hatchet, was forced to close because of flooding damage.

“Just came out of nowhere,” said Crossfit Hatchet owner Mitch Friend on Wednesday. “The entire place was underwater in just under an hour.”

The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Chief Steve Hernen says it could take several days before the roads are repaired.

“The storm systems, the draining ditches, the culverts…they’re just not designed for that much water. That’s why you’re seeing some of the damage you’re seeing throughout the community,” he says.

Several roads remain closed. A full list of the closures can be found here.
