Fire destroyed a small cottage in Collingwood early Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the cottage on Downer Street at around 6:40 a.m. after flames quickly engulfed the building. Firefighters were able to quickly put the blaze out, but not before it destroyed the cottage.

The building is considered a total loss, with damage pegged at under $100,000. Investigators are now trying to pinpoint a cause.

"There is a lot of damage inside obviously, but we have narrowed it down to the kitchen area. We are just in there now trying to figure out what the actual cause was, we know from the patterns in the house and how the fire moved through that it was the kitchen,” says Collingwood fire chief Trent Elyea.

The property was recently sold and the owner was in the process of moving out.
