Don’t veer for deer.

That’s the message Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are sending to drivers this month.

The Grey Bruce counties’ OPP have responded to eight collisions in the past week involving vehicles and deer.

The OPP is advising drivers to stay alert, especially in rural and wooded areas.

Safety tips to avoid deer collisions:

Stay Alert: Keep an eye out for deer, particularly during dawn and dusk when visibility is lower, and deer are most active.

Use High Beams: When safe, use your high beams to help spot deer early, as they reflect the light.

Avoid Swerving: If you see a deer in your path, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can lead to loss of control or collisions with other vehicles.

Do Not Rely on Devices: Devices like deer whistles or reflectors are not foolproof: reduce speed and stay cautious.

Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep space between your vehicle and others to allow time to react if a deer crosses unexpectedly.

If you are involved in a collision with a deer, drivers are asked to contact the OPP's non-emergency line if there are no injuries. Any accident involving more than $2000 in damages or injuries must be reported to the police.
