Deer hunting opens in central Ontario
A controlled deer hunt is underway across parts of Central Ontario between November 4 and 8.
"Gun hunt week is this week," said Sherry Oudit, sales manager at Wolf's Den in Utopia.
Oudit said that this week is a controlled hunt; hunters had to apply to hunt in several counties, such as Simcoe and Dufferin counties.
"They are only permitted to use a shotgun," Oudit said.
However, in Grey County, the Parry Sound area, Huntsville and Gravenhurst regions, hunters can use a shotgun or a rifle.
"It's running Monday to Friday this week. They have to wear hunter orange - ensure at least 40% of their clothing is orange," she said.
Walkers on forest trails should wear bright clothing as well, she added.
Ontario Provincial Police wishes to remind residents to be aware of increased hunter activity and the sound of gunshots during this time.
Police ask hunters to respect the land and always obtain permission before hunting on private property.
Remember to:
- Be respectful: Always respect private land and ensure you have permission before hunting on someone else's property.
- Safety first: Follow all safety regulations, wear appropriate gear, and be aware of your surroundings. Communicate your hunting plans with someone.
- Expect increased activity: Be prepared for more hunters and the sound of gunshots. Stay alert while outdoors.
- Follow regulations: Adhere to local hunting regulations and guidelines to ensure a safe and successful hunt.
- Report issues: If you observe unsafe behavior or violations, report it to local authorities.
- Enjoy the experience: Embrace the opportunity to connect with nature and contribute to wildlife management efforts.
If you suspect someone is driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol call 911. If you have information about suspected unlawful activity, please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
