Two men found guilty in the vicious beating of a Barrie man in 2012 have been handed jail time.
Cousins Courtney and Aaron Lewis were sentenced to two years less a day on Monday in a Barrie court. The pair was also handed a three year probation order.
"This was a devastating and senseless crime," said Justice Susan Healey. "Even though there was no intent for him to receive these devastating injuries, nevertheless the violence involved made it foreseeable. They should have known something very bad would happen. And it did"
The cousins were convicted of aggravated assault in November in the beating of Ryan Turcotte. The 31-year-old suffered severe a head injury and underwent a number of brain surgeries.
Witnesses testified Turcotte and Aaron Lewis got into a pushing match on a bus, when it arrived at the Duckworth Plaza in Barrie in June 2012, from a summer festival in Bala.
Courtney was waiting in the parking lot when the bus pulled in. The court heard that was when the fight took place.
The Crown was seeking a six year prison sentence for both men. The defence for Courtney asked for a one year jail sentence with six years’ probation, while Aaron’s lawyer asked for an eight month jail sentence.
Rob Cooper will have more on the sentencing tonight at six.
