The Barrie Colts are starting to plan for their future as the OHL draft goes today.
The Colts picked Toronto-area native Givani Smith in the first round, 13th overall in the OHL priority selection.
The left-winger, brother of London Knights forward Gemel Smith, registered nine goals and eight assists for 17 points in 26 games with the Mississauga Senators.
In a news release, Colts General Manager Jason Ford said of the pick: “Givani is a power-forward that plays the game with a lot of passion and tenacity. He established himself this season in the GTHL as one of the more difficult players to play against. He combines size and competitiveness with very good skill and hockey sense.”
In the third round, the Colts picked Sam Dunn, a defenceman from Bewdley.
Barrie selected two in the fourth round: Barrie-native Matt Brassard and James Allen from Ennismore. Brassard played for the Barrie Jr. Colts. Allen played in Peterborough for the Jr. Petes.
Sixth round picks for the Colts are head coach Dale Hawerchuk's son Ben Hawerchuk and Zachary Magwood from Cambridge.
