Charges are pending against the landlord of a home west of Huntsville after a fire early Friday morning.
It happened shortly after 3 a.m. on Muskoka Rd. 3 north and when crews arrived on scene the found the fire burning in a bedroom located in a basement apartment.
The people living inside the home made ether way outside and the fire was quickly brought under control. One person was taken to Huntsville Hospital for smoke inhalation.
After further investigation, fire crews found that all smoke alarms in the building were disconnected and the back-up batteries were dead.
Charges are now pending against the landlord for failing to maintain working smoking alarms in both the upper and lower units.
In a press release, Huntsville Fire Chief Stephen Hernen stated “only a working smoke alarm will protect you in the event of a fire and when the fire department finds missing smoke alarms or alarms that have been disconnected charges will be laid.”
No word on the cause of the fire.
