The cause of a fire at townhouse complex in Barrie has been deemed undetermined.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has finished its investigation into Tuesday's fire. The scene has been handed back over to the owners, but an engineer will have to examine the Owen Street complex before residents can return.

Firefighters were called to the complex after flames were spotted on the roof of the complex at around 5:30 a.m. A resident noticed the fire and alerted his neighbours.

Four of the units had extensive water and smoke damage. Total damage is estimated at $500,000.

Nine families were affected by the fire and have been displaced for the time being. Seven of those families are being put up at a hotel by the Red Cross.

Barrie fire officials say only three of the nine townhouse units had working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, which are required by law.

Investigators are looking at charges.

Donations are being accepted at Amanding Construction Ltd. A trust has also been set up at TD Canada Trust to support two of the families.
