Canada Post pulls workers off routes in Barrie and surrounding areas

Neither sleet nor rain will deter a postal worker from their duties.
However, a forecasted 60 centimetres of snow had the national agency pulling drivers from their appointed rounds on Thursday.
Shortly after 11 a.m., Canada post issued a red delivery service alert for Barrie and the surrounding area due to weather conditions.
A red alert signifies Canada Post is suspending delivery and not sending its delivery agents out, or is recalling them.
A statement released Thursday morning read, "Delivery will resume once conditions improve and it's safe to do so. The safety of our employees is our number one priority."

Red and yellow alerts have been around since January 2014. An alert can be issued for a particular community or an entire province, depending on the weather event.
This is the fourth red alert issued in the past five years. The last Barrie event was a yellow alert that was issued in June 2023 for poor air quality due to wildfire. There was an alert January 2023 for poor weather and freezing rain, and another one the previous year in January for inclement weather and snow. There was one before in February of 2020 for severe weather conditions.
In the interim, Canada Post asks residents to clear the snow and ice from walkways, stairs, and driveways for their mail carriers, when service resumes.
