The City of Barrie released data revealing its two automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras have helped to significantly curb speeding in community safety zones, with more than 18,000 tickets issued in five months.

The two cameras were stationed in high-traffic areas at Essa Road at Dunn Street and Ardagh Road west of Morrow Road from Feb. 29 to May 14, then relocated to Cundles Road east of Livingstone Street, and Leacock Drive at Gibbon Drive from May 15 to July 9.

Since the end of February, traffic data collected at these locations shows speed reductions along Essa Road by an average of 16 km/h during school hours. However, traffic on Ardagh Road saw a modest reduction, with speeds decreasing by 3 km/h, and Cundles with a drop of 7 km/h on average.

The City reports the Essa Road and Ardagh Road cameras recorded over 77,000 instances of speeding from February through April, with 8,968 fines issued.

Violations recorded by the Cundles Road and Leacock Drive cameras came in around 58,000, but the city noted that several instances of vandalism at the Leacock location during camera deployment impacted enforcement in the area. Just over 9,102 tickets were issued.

The City says the average ASE fine per ticket was roughly $90. ASE fines do not carry demerit points or impact vehicle insurance. Motorists will receive a ticket within 23 days of the violation, officials say.

The two photo radar cameras are currently along Wellington Street West near Hillcrest Public School and on Grove Street East near Eastview Secondary School.
