Officers conducting a R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot check in Shelburne say they seized 72 cartons of illegal cigarettes, resulting in charges for the driver.

According to Dufferin provincial police, the checkpoint was set up on Victoria Street late last week when officers noticed items inside the man's vehicle.

A 39-year-old man from Mississauga was charged with having unmarked cigarettes for sale.

It's illegal to buy, distribute or possess unmarked cigarettes, which are packages that don't have the tobacco stamp.

If convicted, the penalties are harsh, including a fine of not less than $1,000 and not more than $50,000 for possession of more than 10,000 unmarked cigarettes.

A person convicted of possessing unmarked cigarettes for resale could be sentenced to up to two years in jail, plus hefty fines.
