A second GO Transit track is in the works for Barrie.

Metrolinx announced on Tuesday that work is underway to bring a new GO Line to Barrie, which would allow more train trips to and from the Toronto-area.

In a news release, Metrolinx confirms grading and signal improvements have already started on a six kilometre stretch of rail between York University and Rutherford. The company says construction of a new rail line will follow.

“We are expanding transit and infrastructure for now and for the future," said Steven Del Duca, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation in a statement. “These investments are part of a 10-year plan that will help to manage congestion, connect people to jobs, and improve the economy. This is further proof of our government’s commitment to making the daily commute and quality of life better for Ontario families."

The provincial government is investing $15 billion in the project, to help ease congestion.

Metrolinx also says planning is underway to bring additional trips, including two-way service to the Barrie region.

"This project will help us give our customers more transit choices that will save them time and make it easier to get where they want to go." said Bruce McCuaig, president and CEO of Metrolinx in a statement.
