Jail officials at Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst are still searching the facility and it remains under lockdown.

The search has now been ongoing for more than 24 hours.

Pam Gray, assistant warden management services at Beaver Creek, says this kind of search isn’t one the jail does very often.

Gray says officials conduct regular searches for contraband at the minimum-security facility, but this one is being considered exceptional. She says information came to the warden, which prompted the lockdown and search starting yesterday at about 3 p.m. The search remains in progress today, and it’s unclear how long it will last.

Gray says the search is contained to the Beaver Creek facility. No one is allowed to visit inmates, who are being confined to their units while the search is ongoing.

It’s unclear what jail officials are looking for.
