Starting next year, residents in Tiny Township will no longer be permitted to burn leaves on their property.
Tiny was only one of a few municipalities still in Simcoe County that has allowed the burning of leaves, but at May 11th meeting Council passed a by-law prohibiting it.
"Every year, Fire and Emergency Services responds to numerous calls for assistance as a result of burning leaves," said Fire Chief Tony Mintoff. Given the other options for disposing leaves in a safer, more environmentally-friendly manner, discontinuing the burning of leaves is appropriate," he said.
Since 2013, Simcoe County has provided leaf and garden waste pickup every two weeks during the spring and fall.
The township says residents can also mulch or compost leaves to enrich the soil in their gardens.
Burning of leaves is still permitted this year and the town will spend the next several months educating residents about the new by-law and alternatives.
The by-law takes effect on January 1st, 2016.
