Supporting RVH through 'Keep Life Wild Radiothon'

After the spending rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, offering a chance to focus on generosity, with one local cause making it easy to give back and keep health care closer to home.

Pure Country 106 and BOUNCE 104.1 hosted the Keep Life Wild Radiothon from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to support the region’s largest hospital, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH).

“We want to put the tools in the hands of those who take care of us,” said Pure Country 106 morning show host Jason McCoy. "This is our way of taking care of the RVH team.”

The radiothon highlights the critical role RVH plays in the community, treating patients like Brad Ross, a heart attack survivor who credits the hospital staff with saving his life.

“I can tell people it was really scary at the time, but I also felt that I was in the right place,” Ross shared. “In less than 90 minutes they had cleared the blockage in my artery. It’s thanks to RVH that I’m here talking to you today.”

The health centre’s impact extends far beyond cardiac care.

Dr. Matthew Follwell, RVH’s chief of oncology, emphasized the sheer volume of patients treated annually.

“We have 14,000 new patients who come through this building every year. Between radiation therapy and chemotherapy, it’s 100,000 patients treated here at the cancer centre,” he noted.

The fundraiser got an extra boost Tuesday from PureHealth Pharmacy, which pledged to match every dollar donated up to $50,000.

The radiothon raised $81,000 with some online donations still trickling in.
