A Highway 400 exit ramp in Barrie was closed for nearly 24 hours following reports of a sinkhole.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, crews were called to the Dunlop Street northbound ramp around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday after a contractor discovered the one-metre deep and two-metre-wide sinkhole during an inspection

The ministry noted the utility relocation work happening in the area in advance of the Highway 400 and Dunlop Street interchange reconstruction and underpass replacement project.

All lanes were closed for crews to make the necessary repairs, forcing traffic to detour around the area.

“Repairs have been undertaken, and the ramp was reopened,” the ministry confirmed. The exit ramp was reopened to traffic around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The ministry said its staff are monitoring the area.
