A ski hill in Muskoka is one of only two in Ontario that has opened for the season.
Skiers and boarders are making their first turns of the season and that means Hidden Valley Highlands is open for business. Trent Setterington says he couldn't wait to get back on the snow.
"I feel like, really excited because there's a whole bunch of snow, and I love snow and terrain parks open," the seven-year-old says.
Hidden Valley is only the second ski hill to open in Ontario this season – the other is Calabogie Peaks Resort in the Ottawa Valley.
"It's kind of a badge of honour for us to offer this at this time of year,” says Courtney Payne, a spokesperson for Hidden Valley. “We're super proud of our snow making crew and the hard work that's gone into getting what we have on the hill."
The resort in Huntsville managed to make enough snow for one full run and a small terrain park. For some die hard skiers, it's all they need to get the season started.
"I think it's just the environment we're all in,” says James Eydt. “It's a lot of fun skiing with your friends."
It's not a record for the ski area, Hidden Valley opened about three weeks before this date last year, but for the 80 people, who came out for opening day, it's great to start another year of traditions.
"It’s why we ski, it's a family sport. We spend every weekend together on the slopes, my older son races, my younger son's in the freestyle program and we're just out here to have a pile of fun," says Matt Setterington.
Resort officials say they will close down during the week and reassess conditions on Thursday, but are hopeful reopen again next weekend.
