Remembrance Day isn’t until Friday but several Remembrance Day ceremonies took place across the region over the weekend.
The sound of pipes and drums filled the air in Wasaga Beach on Sunday as the community gathered at the Cenotaph.
It’s been more than seventy years since Frank Horgan served in the Second World War, stationed in the Middle East. On Saturday he was thinking of his many friends who served alongside him.
“I think of some them that I knew, I think of them quite often,” he says.
A ceremony was also held in the community of Beeton on Sunday. Families stopped to watch as the parade passed through the town.
“To make sure the girls understand their history and what they have today shouldn't be taken for granted,” says Beeton Resident Matthew Goodson.
At the Cenotaph chairs were set for some of the older veterans. All but one remained empty this year.
“We do a table at our dinner called the fallen soldiers table and it's an empty chair,” says President of the Legion Branch 421, Chris Miller. “This to me represents the same thing,” he says as he looks at the empty chairs.
Ceremonies were also held in Port McNicoll and Victoria Harbour on Saturday. Upcoming ceremonies will take place in larger centres on Friday, including in Barrie, Collingwood, Alliston and Base Borden.
