Two men are dead in what police are calling a double homicide in Barrie’s north end.
According to investigators, a pickup truck was found stopped on Highway 26 with its four-ways on by the OPP, at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday in Springwater Township.
The officer approached the truck to speak with the driver, who then allegedly sped off. The OPP gave chase, but eventually called off the pursuit due to public safety.
At around 2:45 a.m., Barrie police say they were given the licence plate number of the vehicle and attended the home of the registered owner on Eden Drive. Inside, investigators say they found the bodies of two men.
A third man, who also lives at the residence, was found by the OPP walking on Ridge Road in Shanty Bay and was arrested without incident, at around 5:15 p.m. The pickup truck was located abandoned elsewhere in Barrie.
Police have yet to release the identity of the accused, but say the 45-year-old is known to police. Investigators have not yet been able to determine a time of death and say they could have died four or five days ago.
Neighbours on Eden Drive were surprised to wake up to so much police activity. Angela McCulloch says the residents of the home kept to themselves.
“Came out to let the dog out this morning and saw the crime scene tape… my kids told me what happened and I’m a little scared,” neighbour Angela McCulloch says. “I’m shocked. It’s usually a pretty quiet neighbourhood.”
The investigation is still in the preliminary stage and the accused is expected to appear in a bail court on Wednesday morning.
