Good Samaritans assist officer with allegedly drug-impaired suspect
A stabbing left one man in hospital, another behind bars and an officer grateful for the public's assistance.
A report of a disturbance around Fifth and Ottawa streets in Midland shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday brought Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to the area.
Initial news that a man had been assaulted and was taken away in a vehicle was soon determined to be a stabbing, and that the victim had been brought to a local hospital.
Members of the OPP's Major Crime Unit, Emergency Response Team (ERT) along with the K-9 Unit, who identified a suspect and continued to search the area for the person without success.
Two days later, police were called about a suspicious person at William Street and Hugel Avenue who appeared to be impaired by drugs.
Police identified the person as the suspect in the previous assault incident.
During the arrest, the officer was struck by the man, who was actively resisting arrest.
Police say, without hesitation, two nearby civilians assisted the officer by helping him take control of the suspect and make the arrest.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and released. The suspect was transported to local hospital for precautionary reasons and released back to investigators.
Police charged a 34-year-old Tay Township man has with:
- Aggravated assault
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Assault a peace officer
- Resist a peace officer
- Obstruct a peace officer
- Failure to comply with release order
The accused remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date.
