Canada's Coast Guards Environmental Response Unit was out on Cook’s Bay today to respond to a fuel leak after a large sailboat sank off the coast of Gilford.
The Coast Guard says the vessel was leaking several gallons of diesel into the lake, and there was concern about water contamination. A boom and some absorbent material were deployed to capture the fuel.
York Regional Police were also on hand to deal with safety concerns.
“We’re concerned about somebody hitting the vessel at night. We have deployed battery operated anchor lights on the boat…and we had the coast guard broadcasting on the marine radio warning boaters to stay away from the area, says staff Sergeant Peter Heard.
The sunken boat was discovered yesterday morning. Police say they have checked the boat and are not concerned about the owners safety, but have been unable to locate him.
