A trucking company and driver have been charged in connection to a fatal crash, where police say a wheel came off a tractor trailer and hit another vehicle earlier this year.

The OPP say a transport truck that was travelling southbound along Highway 400 in King Township on Jan. 27, when it lost a set of wheels.

According to police, one of those wheels went into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, 69-year-old Paul Philip Koenderman, later died in hospital.

On Thursday, police announced the driver  of the truck, a 30-year-old man from Quebec, had been charged with criminal negligence causing death.

The Quebec company, Transport Leo Labelle Inc., is charged with wheel separation on a commercial vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act.

The driver and the company will appear in a Newmarket court in July.
