App connects dog owners with private and safe off-leash spaces

An app is connecting Simcoe County dog owners with a chance to let their pets roam freely and safely by renting private properties turned into dog parks.

Dubbed the “Airbnb for dog parks,” Sniffspot is gaining popularity in the region, offering a stress-free experience for dogs and their owners alike.

For dog owner Sarah Kaechele, the app has been a game-changer.

She recently brought her dogs, Lexi and Lata, to a private 14-acre property where they could sniff and explore to their hearts’ content without concern.

“It’s really nice to have that peace of mind that nobody will come into our space uninvited,” said Kaechele. “I don’t have to constantly scan and look around and worry that, around the next corner, there will be a dog that will maybe upset my dogs.”

Sniffspot’s interface is similar to short-term rental platforms like Airbnb.

Property owners, or “hosts,” can list their land for rent as private dog parks.

One of these hosts is Emily Day, who runs an animal rescue and rehabilitation centre in Lisle, just north of Alliston.

Day began renting out her property two years ago after noticing a recurring issue.

“A lot of people contact us saying, ‘We can’t just handle this dog, they’re too reactive,’” Day explained. “In searching for a solution for some of these people who were looking to get rid of their pets, we found this great company.”

Sniffspot caters specifically to owners of “reactive” dogs—pets that may be anxious or uncomfortable around other animals or people.

The app has caught on with dog owners, some of whom travel long distances to try out new locations.

“Some people are traveling all over,” Day said. “It seems to be a bit of a following now where people are exploring the different Sniffspots, so the clients will sit and look for, ‘Where are we going to go this weekend?’”

While Sniffspot originated south of the border, it has expanded into Canada, and has become increasingly popular across the Greater Toronto Area.
