Police say a five-year-old boy who was the subject of an Amber Alert Tuesday morning was found safe south of Barrie.

The alert blasted on mobile devices across the region, notifying that a 65-year-old woman had allegedly taken the child.

The pair were reportedly last seen in Longueuil, Quebec, and police believed they could be headed to the Greater Toronto Area.

Hours later, police confirmed the suspect and the child had been found in York Region. The authorities did not provide details about exactly where they were found or how.

They did confirm the boy was unharmed.

It's unclear if the child and suspect are known to each other.

Amber Alerts are used to quickly notify the public about suspected child abductions where the child is believed to be in danger.

The system is named after Amber Hagerman, a young girl who was abducted and murdered in Texas in 1996, and it has since been adopted in many regions, including Ontario.
