A 46-year-old Midland public school teacher who was involved in a romantic affair with a 15-year-old girl who was his former student was sentenced to jail today.
Steven Richard Kilby pleaded guilty to one count of sexual interference. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and his name will be on the sex offender registry for 10 years. He is also ordered to stay away from the teen.
Court heard Kilby, who has since resigned, taught Grades 5 and 6 at the Huron Park Public school in Midland. The girl was his student in Grade 5 and later Kilby also coached her in basketball. But it wasn't until later, when the teen was in Grade 9 and went to Kilby for tutoring last year, the two got romantically involved. The teen later told her sister she loved Kilby.
In court the Crown described photographs the couple had taken of themselves that showed them kissing and the teen is wrapped in a bed sheet.
When the girls' mother got hold of the photographs she went to police. Police found the couple staying at Kilby's mother's house in Barrie. Kilby was arrested and both he and the teen were taken to hospital because of concerns they were suicidal.
In court Kilby's lawyer insisted Kilby is not a sexual predator - he was just emotionally stressed and had troubles with his marriage and with alcohol.
Just before he was taken to jail, Kilby apologized to the teen's mother, who was in court.
The judge has allowed Kilby to serve the rest of his jail time on weekends.
